The only ships that wont get the military slots is the Clipper and Courier, because they are not military ships. Well those are the two most people care about. Clipper and Courier are the major Imperial combat ships people fly, so that's what I was talking about. Generally you want bi-weave shields on a combat ship. They are weaker but they recharge quickly. So in the RES you engage a target, try your best not to get shot so your shields don't go down but if they do either finish the fight and wait for them to quickly recharge or (if you're hurting) break contact and let them quickly recharge.
It will cost you your rebuy for the ship you had IE insurance. If you did not have enough credits for rebuy and you ship was distroyed. You get a loaned sidewinder. It hurts when you have a larger ship. you loose all your cargo. Fail any mission that cargo was loaned to you and all engineered modules.Bottom line: The Python is probably a good fit for you since you want tons of shields/armor. (and you already have one) The FDL/Mamba are also good choices if you are only doing combat. The single huge hardpoint having most of the DPS is kinda annoying. The krait's shields are too weak without a ton of engineering.

I prefer reactive composite thermal+layered which gives balanced resistances to all normal types of damage (except absolute and corrosive). Normally it means 16-17% to all damage types. And if I need even more resistances and hull HP (which is rarely needed for PvE) I add HRPs with heavy duty+deep plating.
